Accent Vlog!

March 23, 2011

 Hey guys! What is up?

Like I mentioned yesterday, I wanted to do a vlog now that I’ve figured it out.

I decided to do a vlog today for 3 reasons. One, I love to talk. I’m a really good listener, and people I know personally often spill their guts to me. But deep down I’m a talker. I can just go on and on and on and on and on and on, whether you’re interested or not. Two, I really wanted to do this accent vlog. I’m a huge sucker for accents. I love how many different ways people speak the English language. It’s more than just interesting. It is astounding.

In American English alone, there are so many dialects. People in NYC/NJ, New England, Texas, Nebraska, Georgia, Hawaii, Chicago, and California all speak differently. Bring other countries into the picture – such as all the dialects in the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica (as well as other English speaking Caribbean islands) – and you’ve got an endless list of pronounciations for the same exact language. So anyway, I love listening to other’s vlogs for just that reason: hearing how they speak and pronounce their words.

The third reason I wanted to do this vlog was for you guys. When I watch vlogs I feel like I get to know the person better. Hearing a voice allows me to get even more of a sense of who someone is. I also love to match a voice to the face. I know what you look like, and now adding the voice just completes the picture. I was hoping that with this vlog, and by hearing how I talk, you lovely people will get a clearer sense of who Bryana is.

So for the first part, I read a bunch of words so you can hear how I pronounce them. Then in the second part, I answer some questions about the terms I use for different things.

These are the words:

Aunt, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught

and these are the questions:

  • What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
  • What is the bug called that curls into a ball when you touch it?
  • What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
  • What do you call gym shoes?
  • What do you say to address a group of people?
  • What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
  • What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
  • What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
  • What is the thing you change the TV channel with?

And for the record, I do know that stop does not end in the letter “t.”

Excuse the ugly-ass thumbnail picture. And my messy-ass room. And Michael on my walls.

Wow. I am a dork.

You guys are still my friends, right? Hello?

Qs~

Do you love accents?

Do I sound like what you thought I’d sound like?

What words do you pronounce differently than me? The same?

You are so cute 🙂 I loved this vlog and I’m also so surprised at how many variations there are of just one language, wow! I pronounce a lot of the words the same, but some of the terms are different, like I call gym shoes “tennis shoes” and the sun/rain thing “liquid sunshine”–and I love it too, it happens a lot here. My parents always make fun of me because I pronounce “Don” and “dawn” the exact same way. Apparently there’s supposed to be a difference?

Oh! And people in Texas call pretty much all soda “Coke”.

Guessing you’re from Jersey after watching the rest of the vlog… that’s what I get for not being patient!

OMG I LOVE your New Jersey accent!! It’s so interesting to hear your voice because it was nothing like I assumed. In fact it was better 😛 I also love that you pronounce words like “route”, “caramel” and “pecan” the way I do!

My favorite accent of all time is the irish accent. How can you not fall in love with an irishman? 😉

P.S. Do more vlogs in the future, please! 😀

You are so adorable!! It was so much fun to get to see and hear you talk! I call the curly bugs potato bugs…haha! Also, I call the remote either the controller or the clicker. The kids I babysit call it the clicker so that’s kind of stuck with me now. It’s funny to hear the different variations of words!

That was so much fun to watch. You didn’t sound like what I expected, but then again I don’t know what I expected :P. I say most of the things the same way you do, except without the accent. And I’ve never heard of any other word for shopping cart – well, maybe trolley.

Anyhow that was great fun, thanks for posting!

Aw, you’re too cute! I pronounce just about everything the same, as I am from NJ too. You sound just about the way I thought you would, and I love accents!

I totally agree with you on Caramel and Pecan! The other ways just sound funny to me :S I love your accent though! It’s so unique!

I love to see you smiling so much 🙂
